In my closet

As you might have noticed, it's been a while since my last decently written entry. I might be able to use a lack of inspiration as an excuse but that doesn't change the fact that I seriously dislike flooding this blog with wordless entries. So I convinced myself that it would be worth the effort to write something down that consists of more than 5 words. For some reason, I tend to resort to blogging about something fashionrelated everytime I feel uninspired (I wonder why?). Apologies for that.

Anway, these last few days/weeks I've spend an awful lot of time on cleaning out my closet. I had so many clothes that had never even gotten to see the light of day, I figured I could just as well get rid of them. It was more difficult than I thought it would be, parting with clothes that are in a way still wearable isn't exactly easy. But it was necessary. I tend to get a bit overwhelmed when I have too much choice, and I feel obliged to wear the things I don't completely love, just because they are hanging in my closet. Hopefully my new smaller wardrobe will make getting dressed a lot easier and more fun.

Right now my summer wardrobe consists of:

6 dresses
1 striped sweaterdress
3 blazers: black, navy, white
1 short trench jacket

2 button up shirts: blue&white stripes/purple&black plaid
5 blouses (short sleeves)
4 tops

1 vest
7 tshirts
3 cardigans
2 skirts

4 pairs of shorts
2 pairs of jeans
1 pair of trousers
5 scarves
2 bags

8 pairs of shoes

It will be a challenge to make it work, but I have no other choice since I promised myself that I won't buy anything new until fall collections hit the stores. Or as I like to call that moment, september. And from then on I will only buy pieces I am madly in love with. Eventhough I'd love to pretend otherwise, paying a little more for something you absolutely love is so worth it. (remember my Isabel Marant blouse? I wish I could wear it everyday!) Even Especially if that means I'll be able to buy less, true love over quantity, right?

I'm not quite sure how this information could be useful to anyone, but I noticed I quite enjoy reading about the content of other people's closets and their approach on purchasing new clothes. So I took the liberty of assuming that some of you might actually feel the same. After all, I don't believe that I'm the only one who has developed a certain dislike towards mindless consumerism.

I guess the real question of this post is: are you satisfied with your wardrobe?
Do you prefer having a large amount of clothes over having a smaller, more compact wardrobe? Do you think there is such a thing as owning too many clothes? What's the first thought that pops into your mind when you open your closet doors? Do you prefer quality over quantity or vice versa?

i'd rather much see quality than quanity but i'm stocking things up because sometimes i need to style my models (i'm a fashion photographer). so i guess what i really need is to strictly organize my clothes. i do get overwhelmed but i'm planning to give away a quarter (which is so much) of my whole wardrobe. yikes. well good luck !!! :)

I remember that you asked this question on the adorevintage forums a while back, and I think my opinion has changed a little since then... but it's difficult. I definitely do love quality - things that you'll wear over and over again. Lately I've been thinking that I should only buy clothes that are love at first sight because those are the clothes I would treasure for years. Though those clothes don't always need to be expensive, so then quality over quantity isn't always true.
I do really hate the feeling of looking into my closet feeling like I have nothing to wear, and I think it's great what you're doing - reorganising your closet like that.

years now i 'm opening my wardrobe with that exact same feeling! i always want more and 'better' clothes in it. you know like the one i imagined that day or the other i saw on one editorial..! i have so many tops that i haven't worn for years and still i cannot get rid of them all at once. each year i give away the oldest ones. but i was thinking that even if i manged to buy now every single piece that i think that i absolutely need, still there would be lots that would pop up the next day!! i think i can never have enough! and if i had to choose? .. i think that would be having the basics but the good ones!! so yes quality over quantity!

*wish my wardrobe was so organised like the one i see here!!!! that's perfection!

I would love to see a picture of the items that you decided to keep!! :)) I do love your post no need to apologize!

I try to be minimalist... it's so refreshing to read other bloggers that feel the same way.. :) I really believe in investing in quality garments, summer is hard though..as the clothes which are most suited are usually not of the best quality.

Hmm.

I can't control myself when I see something I like, unless its extremely expensive or something. So I also have a bunch of neglected things in my wardrobe.

I love this. I really do need to get a grip on what I have in my wardrobe and what I need to stop buying. I find myself repeat-buying certain styles of things, totally forgetting that I probably already have a closet full of whatever it may be.

You have definately inspired me to get my butt in gear and go through my mess of clothing!

I still haven't heard anything from Supreme yet, which worries me, but as long as I keep my fingers crossed I hope to get a good response!! (Someway, somehow!)

Hope you're well, love! I'll let you know how it goes.

Ack! I'm so inspired. My bedroom currently looks like a clothing bomb went off and shot clothes everywhere. I've always wanted a paired down chic wardrobe, but I just. keep. buying. . . I am taking this post to heart, and I'm hoping that I will one day be able to see my floor.

i agree, very refreshing! i'm trying to go lean in my wardrobe as well. as late as last night i was sorting through my clothes. anything that hasn't been worn for 3 months must go on eBay (the exception of winter clothes of course!).. i wouldn't be able to do with so few pairs of shoes, though but i love the idea of only having clothes you really adore as well. oh, and i'd also love to see the pieces that made it to the final rack! ;)

thanks for the comments everyone, glad to hear I was able to inspire others with this post! And it's really great to read everyone's 'experiences' regarding this topic!

I will do a follow up post with more pictures sometime soon ;)

I want a 'perfect' wardrobe and limiting what one buys and have is a great way of doing it. I want a wardrobe which I love every item in, but I find by doing that I get too attached to them... so I feel /I have to buy 'fillers' that I can wear for everyday... I have not found a solution to that.

mmr zei

I think I know what you mean. I noticed that the more clothes I got rid of the more attached I got to the pieces that were left. But obviously, the less you have, the more you'll have to wear the clothes you do have and the bigger the risk something will eventually happen to them. So buying filler pieces does sound like a pretty good idea. Eventhough it seems contrary to the whole idea of only buying the things you truly love... Hmmmz I should give that some more thought

I totally share your new "philosophy" towards clothing.
